If you take a C note and double or half its frequency you get the next higher or lower C note. Technically the reason keys mix is that the frequencies physically align and reinforce each other. Becomes pretty obvious that the in key mix flows beautifully and the out of key is hard to stomach. pick two tracks, mix them on your rig or in software, both in and out of key. Some may be too drunk to care, but others will feel the pain and not because they are musicians who know, but because it just sounds shitty.ĭo a listening test and then see if you think it matters. To just plow ahead and drop on of those turds on an audience is pretty primitive. We all know when songs just don't mix even thought the BPMs match. Definitely sounds interesting.īy the way, soundmind, those "progressive" people mix their records in key without actually knowing it as all of their tunes sound the same and were produced the same way anyway ) I think he studied Musicology or something like that, however, he mixes all of his records according to their key, regardless of any beats. If you want to key-mix all of your tunes you will have to figure out each of your records' keys, write them down and then program your set according to that information or calculate the compatibility during your set and that a) is a lot of work and b) requires significantly more knowledge about music and basic music theory than your average Techno head has, which can be more or less hard to acquire.įor example, I know a guy who has his roots in Classical music and Jazz rather than in Techno but basically plays anything from early Jeff Mills to Steve Reich to whatever, really. The thing is that you can mix your records in key just by intuition (read: because you "know" your records or because you previously tried it) in let's say 3 out of 4 cases but the occasional out of key transition will happen nevertheless. So yes, key mixing is indeed very important, personally I'd say just almost as "important" as beat mixing (although I basically don't consider mixing all that important at all, or at least not as much as most DJs and listeners do nowadays). A friend of mine, for instance, who had just gotten into mixing once told me there was something wrong with his transitions even though the beats were well matched - he just couldn't tell what it was. I disagree! It's very easily noticeable when two tracks are out of key, many people just can't point a finger on the problem as the dysphony is often much discreeter than e.g. Most people will not notice that u arent mixing in key
